Before you think about colors or styles, pick a word for the day: romantic, relaxed, polished, playful. A romantic shower might call for lace and a floor-length skirt. A relaxed backyard party might suit an airy chiffon dress. A polished brunch might suit clean lines and a little sheen. That one word makes every other choice easier.
Choose a shape that works with your bump
- Empire waist: a seam just under the bust, so the skirt falls over your bump instead of pulling across it.
- A flowing skirt: A-line or gathered skirts move with you when you sit, hug and stand up again.
- Comfortable sleeves: flutter or off-shoulder sleeves feel light in warm weather; sheer or lace long sleeves keep you covered in cooler rooms.
You’ll be sitting to open gifts, standing for photos and hugging a lot of people. Choose the dress you can do all three in without thinking about it.
Pick a color for your setting
Soft colors are classic for showers: blush pink, white and ivory and light blue. If your shower has a theme color, you can match it or pick a shade lighter so you stand out against the decorations. Deeper shades like wine red and deep green look rich at evening or fall parties.
Think about the venue and the season
A garden party on grass is easier in a dress that clears the ground or that you can lift a little as you walk. An indoor brunch suits a midi or maxi with sleeves. For fall and winter showers, look at long sleeves or bring a soft wrap. Flat shoes are your friend on lawns, steps and long afternoons.

Your bust and bump can change in the weeks before your shower. Measure close to the date if you can, compare with the size guide on the dress you love, and leave a little room for growth.
